Review: Cluedo 2 at the New Theatre in Cardiff

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Following the success of the first stage show, one of the nation’s favourite boardgames has once again been adapted into a side-splitting story. Cluedo 2 is the latest whodunnit to hit the stage of the New Theatre in Cardiff. Have you ever wondered what kind of accent Miss Scarlett has? What the profession of Reverend Green is? Or whether Mrs Peacock is married? You get to witness your favourite characters come to life as they find themselves in the middle of a murder mystery – but the biggest question is, who is the culprit?

We meet Rockstar Rick Black who is in the midst of recording a new album for his band, which he hopes to be a hit with their fans. When Rick is found murdered in his study with the knife, the rope, the candlestick, and the wrench, the mystery ramps up. Some of the characters in the house have good intentions, while others don’t. We watch as the bodies pile up and we are taken on a twist-and-turn story to discover who really murdered Rick and why.

Having watched my fair share of murder mystery plays, I went into the auditorium with expectations of what I would like to see. That said, I wasn’t quite sure how they were going to bring a boardgame to life. It’s fair to say that Cluedo 2 absolutely smashed any expectation of what I had for your classic whodunnit. It was genius! The creatives involved in making this show have been unapologetic about including the classic elements of the game and almost making a mockery of it throughout. The comedic writing of the script is genuinely hilarious and the direction of it very well timed. It’s a show that can laugh at itself and uses that technique to entice the audience into the story.

As with most theatre shows nowadays, you’ll recognise some famous faces among the cast including Jason Durr (Casualty, Heartbeat, Midsommer Murders) in the role of Colonel Mustard and Ellie Leach (Strictly Come Dancing) in the role of Miss Scarlett. A big hats off to the entire cast of Cluedo 2 for being fantastic at bringing each character to life and for playing an important role in bringing together the comedy of the piece. I think it can be risky with a whodunnit stage show that the comedy borderlines on cringy, but I did not find this to be the case with Cluedo 2; it was perfectly done!

If you’re in need of a good laugh and a wholesome night out this week, I cannot recommend this show enough. It’s a great way to escape the heat in the lovely air-conditioning of the New Theatre and grab a nice drink and an ice-cream while you’re there. Cluedo 2 is in Cardiff until this Saturday 29th June, so grab your tickets before it’s too late: https://trafalgartickets.com/new-theatre-cardiff/en-GB/event/play/cluedo-2-tickets
