Michael Flatley’s world famous show has made a return to the UK, promising to wow audiences as it tours the UK with its’ revival Lord of the Dance – A Lifetime of Standing Ovations. Since its premier over 25 years ago, Flatley’s creative genius has seen global success and paved the way for the world of dance. ‘Lord of the Dance’ and ‘Michael Flatley’ are household names, as such it is a show that must be seen and experienced in one’s lifetime. Walking into the New Theatre in Cardiff on a rainy Tuesday evening in September is where I experienced this on-stage wonder for the first time, and it was an evening that I will never forget.

I have seen a variety of shows in my time of all genres and styles of art, dance included, but never had I seen Irish dance beyond the television. I didn’t know what to expect and, knowing that the show was a couple of hours long, I wasn’t sure how they were going to make Irish dance engaging for such a long time. To my surprise, Lord of the Dance is a cocktail of dancing, singing, live music, and somewhat of a story about a battle for the ‘Lord of the Dance’ title. The story is told from the perspective of the character Little Spirit, we witness their dreams in a classic tale of good vs evil. There’s no denying that this show is incredibly camp, but it is unapologetically so; it’s easy to tell that Flatley has a history of performing for Eurovision. It’s nothing like anything that I’ve ever seen, but it’s spectacular.
I’m always in awe of the talent that graces our local stages, and it’s safe to say that the entire cast of Lord of the Dance have trained hard for many years to put on the performance of a lifetime. Their feet are fast beyond imagination and it’s mesmerising to watch. It’s easy to dismiss dance as a skill but there is no mistaking that these people are incredibly good at what they do. Not only that, but they bring joy to the faces of every audience that sits in front of them. The production team didn’t hold back on including an array of beautiful costumes, dramatic lighting, and colourful stage projections to create an atmosphere and bring the story together. Also, I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but despite Flatley not being in the show itself, you might still get a performance from the man himself in another way.

There’s a reason this UK tour title includes the claim ‘A Lifetime of Standing Ovations’ because this show amazes audiences time after time. There was indeed a standing ovation on this rainy Tuesday at the New Theatre in Cardiff. If you want to experience the dream-like show for yourself and get involved in the legacy of standing ovations, you can catch Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance – A Lifetime of Standing Ovations in the New Theatre, but you don’t have long, as it’s only here until this Thursday 12th September.
