Visitors arriving in Cardiff this summer may notice something rather special waiting for them outside Cardiff Central Station.
Five life-sized sculptures have appeared in Central Square, celebrating some of the most influential women from Welsh history, mythology and folklore.
Created by Cadw, the striking installation invites visitors to discover the remarkable stories of women who helped shape Wales, from legendary princesses and saints to pioneering campaigners and historical figures.
Each sculpture is linked to a Cadw site, encouraging people to explore the places connected to these extraordinary women and delve deeper into Wales’ rich heritage.
The Five Women Featured
Santes Dwynwen
Known as the Welsh patron saint of lovers, Santes Dwynwen is celebrated for her story of love, sacrifice and compassion. Often compared to St Valentine, she is honoured every year on 25 January, St Dwynwen’s Day.
Branwen ferch Llŷr
One of the most famous characters from the Mabinogion, Branwen was a legendary Welsh princess whose tragic tale of love, betrayal, war and reconciliation remains one of Wales’ greatest myths.
Gwenllian ferch Gruffudd
A fearless Welsh princess and national heroine, Gwenllian became a symbol of Welsh resistance after leading her army against Norman forces in 1136. Her bravery continues to inspire generations.
Gwladys ferch Dafydd Gam
A Welsh noblewoman with strong links to Raglan Castle, Gwladys played an important role in one of medieval Wales’ most influential families and helped preserve the legacy of one of the country’s grandest castles.
Margaret Thomas (Lady Rhondda)
One of the most influential Welsh women of the 20th century, Lady Rhondda was a successful businesswoman, leading suffragette and tireless campaigner for women’s rights, helping pave the way for greater equality.
The installation offers visitors an opportunity to celebrate the women whose stories have shaped Wales through mythology, history, leadership and courage, while inspiring people to visit the Cadw sites connected to their remarkable lives.
