Wales is set to play a major role in UEFA Euro 2028 after it was announced that Cardiff will host the opening ceremony of the tournament, along with six high-profile matches.
The iconic Cardiff stadium, currently known as the Principality Stadium, will undergo a temporary rebrand for the duration of the competition in line with UEFA’s tournament sponsorship guidelines. Despite the name change, fans can expect the same electric atmosphere the venue is known for, as it takes centre stage in one of the biggest football events in the world.
The stadium, which holds over 74,000 spectators, will kick off the tournament in spectacular fashion with a glittering opening ceremony, setting the tone for a month-long celebration of football across the UK and Ireland. Alongside the ceremony, six matches – including a major opening fixture – will be hosted in the Welsh capital, bringing thousands of fans and an economic boost to the region.
UEFA Euro 2028 will be jointly hosted by the UK and Ireland, with matches taking place across England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland. Cardiff’s role as a host city marks another milestone in Wales’ growing reputation as a world-class sporting destination.
First Minister of Wales, Vaughan Gething, said: “This is a proud moment for Wales and a fantastic opportunity to show the world what we have to offer. Hosting the opening ceremony and matches of such a major international tournament will bring huge excitement, as well as long-term benefits for tourism, hospitality, and grassroots sport.”
The announcement comes after a successful bid by the Football Association of Wales (FAW), which played a pivotal role in securing Cardiff’s inclusion in the Euro 2028 schedule. With its retractable roof and central location, the stadium is considered one of the finest in Europe – and a perfect choice to open the tournament.
Wales fans will now be eagerly awaiting the match draw, hoping to see their national team not only qualify but play a home fixture in front of a sea of red in Cardiff.
More details about the opening ceremony and fixtures are expected to be released closer to the tournament.
