Six Vale Beaches Named Among Wales’ Best in Prestigious Coast Awards

Penarth gains coveted Seaside Award a third year in a row at the prestigious Wales Coast Awards

Six beaches in the Vale of Glamorgan have been named among the best coastal destinations in Wales, following the announcement of this year’s Wales Coast Awards by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy.

Barry Island’s Whitmore Bay and Jackson’s Bay, Cold Knap, Llantwit Major Beach, and Dunraven Bay in Southerndown have all retained their Seaside Award status for 2025. Meanwhile, Penarth Beach proudly reclaimed its Seaside Award for the third time—flying the coveted yellow and blue flag that signifies high environmental standards, excellent facilities, safety, and cleanliness.

This recognition places the Vale firmly on the map for beach lovers once again, as part of a wider list of 49 Welsh beaches acknowledged for their commitment to quality and coastal care.

The news was particularly well-received by Penarth’s vibrant sea-swimming community, the Dawnstalkers, who gather daily for sunrise dips come rain or shine. The group, which started in 2020, has become a powerful advocate for outdoor wellness, community connection, and cold-water therapy—with over 22,000 followers on Instagram and around 30 early risers braving the waves each morning.

To mark Penarth’s award, Keep Wales Tidy Chief Executive Owen Derbyshire joined the Dawnstalkers for a celebratory morning dip, personally presenting the 2025 Seaside Award flag on the pebbled shoreline.

Grant Zehetmayr, co-founder of the Dawnstalkers, shared his pride in the recognition:
“We’re super pleased Penarth and other local beaches have retained the award for another year. It’s so important that our coast is cared for and protected, so people have confidence when accessing our bathing waters – a free amenity that is vital to our wellbeing.”

The Seaside Award is a UK-only accolade granted to beaches that meet strict criteria for cleanliness, safety, and visitor amenities. It’s a symbol recognised by locals and tourists alike and plays a vital role in promoting sustainable, safe access to our coastline.

Across Wales, 21 beaches also received the international Blue Flag status—an award that acknowledges world-class water quality, environmental education, accessibility, and sustainability. Winners include Tenby’s North and South beaches, Poppit Sands in Pembrokeshire, and Swansea’s Caswell Bay and Langland Bay.

In addition, 13 beaches received the Green Coast Award, celebrating unspoiled, off-the-beaten-path locations such as Mwnt, Penbryn, and Freshwater East—places prized for their natural beauty and environmental standards.

Owen Derbyshire praised the collective effort of staff and volunteers who maintain these award-winning spaces:
“The Wales Coast Awards are a fantastic celebration of Wales’ beautiful and diverse coastline and are testament to the huge effort of staff and volunteers at sites across Wales.”

He added:
“We’re delighted that Penarth has joined the other Seaside Award beaches along the coastline. It was great to meet the fantastic Dawnstalkers and hear how the beach has provided a safe community place for so many.”

With the summer season fast approaching, these accolades are a timely reminder of the stunning coastal experiences right on our doorstep—perfect for families, swimmers, nature lovers, and beachgoers looking for both adventure and tranquility.
