Review: Wicked at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

A spellbinding night of magic, music and memories

For anyone with a love for magic, unforgettable songs, and larger-than-life characters, Wicked at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff is simply a must-see. I recently took my grandchildren, twins boy and girl 9 year old ) to see it, and let me tell you, it was an experience they – and I – won’t forget anytime soon. This was their first seeing this theatre show, and they were blown away by the sheer scale of it all. I think it’s safe to say the look on their faces as the lights dimmed and the music kicked in was worth every penny!

It’s no surprise that this particular run of Wicked has drawn in younger audiences, especially with the buzz around the upcoming movie featuring pop star Ariana Grande and it arriving in Cardiff around Halloween. The excitement in the air was contagious, and you could feel that everyone was there to experience something truly special, even those who have seen this show many times.

From the opening scenes to the final curtain, the production is one that draws you straight into the world of Oz. The costumes were as dazzling as I remember – if not better – and the set design was beyond impressive. Every little detail seemed designed to pull you deeper into the story, making it feel like you’d really stepped into another world. My grandkids were absolutely mesmerised, their eyes widening with every dramatic scene change.

The undeniable highlights of the show were the performances by Laura Pick as Elphaba and Sarah O’Connor as Glinda. Their voices were just incredible, hitting high notes with such power and emotion that you could practically feel it in your bones. When they belted out Defying Gravity and she held her broom up, the crowd was right there with them, singing along in the stalls.

For anyone who loves theatre or simply wants to get lost in an unforgettable story, Wicked’s five-week Cardiff run is not to be missed but tickets might be hard to come by as this has almost sold-out. Which speaks for it’s self for a show that has ended in standing ovations and five-star reviews, and it’s easy to understand why. Just make sure to grab tickets if you still can – they’re selling out fast, but with any luck, there might be a few returns online.

Wicked is performing at the Wales Millennium Centre and will run until Saturday, 23rd November 2024. If you’re on the fence about going, let this be the nudge you need. And trust me – take the kids, take the whole family, because the magic of Oz is best shared with the ones you love.
