One show you’re not going to feel shortchanged as they deliver an epic box set of a stage show.
The penultimate show in Cardiff’s summer stadium run saw two of the biggest names in hip-hop and R&B share the Principality stage, as Kendrick Lamar and SZA brought their “Grand Tour” to the city.
There was plenty of buzz despite a relatively short run-up to the show and the stadium was packed with a mix of fans from both camps. While many might’ve expected a full co-headline show with shared stage time, the night was more of a collaboration in chapters. Kendrick and SZA each performed solo sets, swapping over in intervals, with brief overlaps rather than joint performances throughout. It wasn’t seamless, but it worked, like turning the page in an epic three-part story.
The stage design was massive. A sprawling set-up of stairways, bridges and platforms cut right through the stadium floor, reaching fans in every corner. There was a “golden circle” — no barriers but the layout made this pointless, as they walked head high among the audience and it made for one of the most inclusive stadium layouts we’ve seen in years. At one point, both artists even performed while suspended above the crowd in a platform.
The production was next level. Pyro, fireworks, immersive visuals, this was a true stadium show from start to finish. Kendrick kept things grounded with a raw, stripped-back set design, letting his lyrics take the spotlight with his entourage as he powered through tracks like HUMBLE, Alright, DNA, Not Like Us, closing his set with LUTHOR
SZA, on the other hand, brought the surreal. She rode on a giant ant, floated across the stage as a butterfly, and gave her own set an ethereal, theatrical fairytale of insects vibe that matched her vocals perfectly. Kill Bill, Broken Clocks, Snooze and Good Days were all standouts — with Gloria as her stunning closer.
The two united throughout the show but it was All the Stars, that brought the connection together. A huge shared moment that sent the crowd into full singalong mode.
In an era where some stadium shows barely reach 90 minutes, Kendrick and SZA delivered nearly 50 tracks combined. Cardiff was treated to something exciting, ambitious and groundbreaking, two headlines in one gonsmacking performance. Getting two great names two shows in in evening seems like a concept we can get behind and the fans of each one soaked up every minute . A real high point in this year’s summer of live music.
