Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat – Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff

The technicolour magic is well and truly back in Cardiff with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat lighting up the Wales Millennium Centre in a burst of energy, colour and pure musical joy.

The Biblical story of Joseph, the 11th son of Jacob and Rachel, survivor of attempted fratricide, one-time slave, and eventual Vizier of Egypt, made a fine basis for a musical five decades ago, and time has been very kind and it sounds as good now as it ever have.

From the moment the curtain rose, it was a visual spectacle. Morgan Large’s vibrant set and costume design flooded the stage with colour, scene after scene, and yes, the camel prop absolutely stole hearts! JoAnn M Hunter’s choreography had the entire cast moving with infectious energy, including the brilliant children’s ensemble, who were just as committed as the adults.

Adam Filipe delivered a strong, heartfelt performance as Joseph, with vocals that carried the emotion and charm of the role perfectly. Christina Bianco, as the Narrator, was a powerhouse, switching characters on a dime and gliding across the stage with endless enthusiasm. Her vocal range is genuinely impressive, adding flair and depth to every scene.

But it was Joe McElderry as Pharaoh who nearly ran away with the whole show. His performance was electric, full of charisma, humour and vocal power. The audience lapped it up and he gave every ounce back.

In short, this is a joyfully slick, colourful production packed with talent and energy. A standing ovation that was fully earned. If you’re looking for an all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza from start to finish, blessed with an expansive, and immensely talented company of singer-dancers, then this is it . Cardiff don’t miss it.
