A bold new mural has been unveiled in Splott Park – and it’s not just a tribute to a Welsh football legend, it’s a celebration of local talent too.
Pupils from Baden Powell Primary, Moorland Primary and Willows High have played a huge part in bringing the artwork to life, working with local artists Yusuf and Shawqi from Unify Creative to honour Cardiff-born football icon Jess Fishlock.
Commissioned by the Football Association of Wales and Wales Arts International, the mural marks the build-up to the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, where the Wales Women’s National Team will make history by competing in their first major tournament.
The young artists took part in creative workshops exploring identity, sport and what community means to them. Guided by Cardiff’s Curriculum Team, they helped shape the final design – and even got to paint sections of the mural themselves. Their personal artwork will also be included in a larger community exhibition later this year.
The official unveiling brought together local pupils and councillors for the first kick-about on the newly upgraded pitch in front of the mural.
Cllr Sarah Merry, Cabinet Member for Education, said:
“This is such a powerful example of how education, sport and the arts can come together to inspire young people. The pupils have created something that not only celebrates Jess Fishlock and the Welsh women’s team, but their own creativity and community pride too. It’s a reminder to every young person who plays here that they can dream big – and who knows, maybe even play for Wales one day.”
As the countdown to EURO 2025 continues, this striking artwork will stand tall in Splott – a colourful legacy of belief, talent and teamwork.
