Cardiff Will Host the First UEFA Euro 2028 Game

Cardiff has officially been confirmed as the stage for the opening match of UEFA EURO 2028, marking a historic milestone for Welsh sport and the city’s growing reputation as a global events destination. The first game will take place at the National Stadium of Wales (Principality Stadium) on Friday 9 June 2028, kicking off a summer of world-class football.

In total, six matches will be played in Cardiff — including group stage fixtures, a last 16 clash, and a quarter-final. The tournament will be jointly hosted across the UK and Ireland, uniting the nations for what is set to be the largest sporting event ever staged by the five co-hosts.

Cllr Huw Thomas, Leader of Cardiff Council, described the announcement as a “tremendous honour” and a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” for the Welsh capital.

“Hosting the opening match of UEFA EURO 2028 is a tremendous honour for Cardiff and a testament to our city’s reputation as a world-class destination for major events. This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity that will bring people together, inspire pride, and deliver significant economic and social benefits for our communities.

With less than 1,000 days to go until the tournament begins, we’re working closely with UEFA and our city partners to deliver a real celebration of everything people love about the game.”

He added that the eyes of the footballing world will be on Cardiff on 9 June, with the city set to come alive for each of the six matches.

“We’re proud to be part of EURO 2028. The atmosphere in the city will be electric, and we’re ready to showcase the very best of Welsh hospitality and culture to fans from across Europe and beyond.”

An independent study has predicted that UEFA EURO 2028 could generate up to £3.6 billion in socio-economic benefitsacross the UK and Ireland between 2028 and 2031. Cardiff is expected to see major direct gains for local businesses, hospitality venues, and suppliers, with an influx of visitors set to create jobs and boost the regional economy.

The tournament will also deliver a legacy of community and cultural initiatives. The largest-ever UEFA EURO Community Programme will launch alongside the championship, using sport to promote inclusivity, inspire participation, and create lasting social impact across Cardiff and Wales.

With just under three years to go, preparations are already underway to ensure that Cardiff — and Wales — deliver an unforgettable celebration of football, culture, and community spirit when EURO 2028 kicks off in the capital.
