Why Cardiff Farmers Markets are one of the city’s biggest gems

There are plenty of places to buy food in Cardiff – but few make shopping feel as joyful, sustainable and community-focussed as Cardiff Farmers Markets.

Held weekly in Rhiwbina (Fridays), Roath (Saturday) andRiverside (Sundays), the markets bring together local growers, farmers, makers and independent food businesses to give people the chance to buy fresh, seasonal produce directly from the people who grew, baked, reared or made it.

In a world where so much of our food comes wrapped in plastic, shipped long distances and sold through anonymous supermarket aisles, Cardiff Farmers Markets offer something refreshingly different: real food, real people and real conversation – and they’ve been doing it for more than 25 years.

You can ask a grower like Paul’s Veg how to cook an unfamiliar vegetable. You can find out what is in season. You can buy produce with mud still on it, bread still warm from the Riverside Sourdough ovens, or cheese, eggs, honey, flowers and street food from passionate local producers who care deeply about what they do. You can speak to John and Celia from Penrhiw Farm about the way their animals are raised, and exactly what that means.

The markets are also social spaces. Somewhere to bump into neighbours, bring the kids, grab a coffee, chat to traders and feel part of the city’s food community. For many regulars, a weekend market visit is not just a shopping trip – it’s a ritual.

Cardiff Farmers Markets have also played a key role in the Planet Card pilot, helping low-income households access organic and planet-friendly fruit and vegetables while supporting local farmers. You can find out more about that here.

That is what makes them special. They are not just selling food. They are helping build a healthier, more connected and more sustainable Cardiff, one weekly shop at a time. Find them at:
