These players were often black or hailed from areas that were overlooked by the rugby establishment. The barriers they faced led them to seek opportunities in rugby league, where they found a welcoming space to excel.
The stories of these three incredible players are a testament to their passion, courage, and perseverance. Jim Sullivan, one of the codebreakers, went on to become the lead point scorer for Wales in rugby league, solidifying his status as a true legend of the sport. Clive Sulivan went on to become first Welsh black captain, breaking down racial barriers and inspiring countless others to follow in his footsteps.
Friends and family, as well as rugby enthusiasts and locals, gathered at Landsea Square to witness the historic moment as the bronze statue of the three players was revealed. The monument not only honours Billy Boston, Clive Sullivan, and Gus Risman but also pays tribute to the other ten remarkable individuals who were part of the codebreakers’ movement.
The statue stands as a symbol of defiance, breaking free from the constraints of prejudice and exclusion, and embracing the power of unity. It is a reminder of the enduring impact these players had on rugby league, Welsh sports, and society as a whole. Their actions not only shaped their own lives but also paved the way for future generations of athletes from diverse backgrounds to thrive in the sport.
The ‘One Team – One Race, Honouring the Cardiff Bay Rugby Codebreakers’ project launched in 2020 raised money to create the statue chosen from 13 sports stars who made a contribution playing rugby over the past 120 years. All of the 13 nominees grew up within a three-mile radius of Cardiff Bay.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
