Music legend Stevie Wonder will perform at Blackweir Fields on Wednesday, 9 July, as part of Cardiff’s blockbuster summer of live music. To ensure the safety of all attendees and smooth crowd movement, a number of road closures and travel measures will be in place across the city.
Road Closures
Key roads in Cardiff city centre will be closed from 4pm to midnight on the day of the event:
- Castle Street (entire length from Westgate Street)
- Duke Street and Kingsway
- North Road, from Colum Road to Boulevard De Nantes; Boulevard De Nantes at Park Place (access for buses, taxis and residents to Greyfriars Road will be managed)
- Cowbridge Road East, from Cathedral Road to Westgate Street (access to Westgate Street permitted)
Access to parts of the Civic Centre will also be restricted from 7am on Wednesday. Affected roads include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road. The right-hand turn from Colum Road into Corbett Road will be suspended during the closure period to manage access for residents and businesses.
Trains
Transport for Wales (TfW) and Great Western Railway (GWR) will provide additional services where possible, but passengers are strongly advised to:
- Plan their journey in advance
- Allow extra time for boarding post-event
- Check last train departure times via TfW JourneyCheck
Post-show queues for mainline services will be at Central Square, while Valleys Line passengers will queue at the rear of Cardiff Central station. Revenue checks will take place before and after the event, so make sure to purchase your tickets in advance.
Cathays station will close at 10pm on Wednesday, with limited access for accessibility needs only.
Penarth Road car park at Cardiff Central will be closed from 6am to midnight.
Cardiff Bus Interchange and the Saunders Road taxi rank will remain open.
Event Parking
There are no park & ride facilities for this concert, but parking is available at the following sites:
- Civic Centre Event Day Parking
- £20 for cars / £30 for coaches
- Open 8am to midnight
- Follow signs from Junction 32, M4
- Sophia Gardens Parking
- £20 for cars / £30 for coaches
- Open 8am to midnight
- Staffed until 7pm (vehicles left after closing are at owners’ risk)
Bus Travel
Local buses will be diverted during the road closure times. Please check the operator’s website for updates:
National Express will continue to operate services to and from Sophia Gardens as usual.
Plan Ahead
Concert-goers are strongly encouraged to arrive early and familiarise themselves with the city’s travel restrictions. With heavy traffic expected on the M4 and across Cardiff, early travel will help avoid delays.
