The Princess of Wales becomes patron of Tŷ Hafan

The Princess of Wales has today become Patron of Tŷ Hafan Children’s Hospice, the first children’s hospice in Wales.

In a heartwarming announcement today, The Princess of Wales has taken on the role of Patron for Tŷ Hafan, the first children’s hospice in Wales. This significant move underscores her commitment to supporting children and families facing some of life’s most challenging circumstances.

Tŷ Hafan, which means ‘Haven House’ in English, has been a beacon of hope for families across Wales since its establishment. The hospice provides free, holistic care and support to children with life-shortening conditions, as well as their families. Their services extend beyond the walls of the hospice, reaching into homes and communities to ensure families feel supported at every stage of their journey—throughout a child’s life, during end-of-life care, and beyond into bereavement.

At the core of Tŷ Hafan’s mission is a dedication to addressing the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the children and families they serve. The hospice also fosters a sense of community, creating connections that help families feel less isolated during incredibly difficult times.

The Princess of Wales marked her new role with a visit to Tŷ Hafan’s hospice in Sully, near Cardiff, where she met with children, families, and staff. Her presence was met with gratitude and excitement, as her involvement is expected to bring greater awareness and support to the hospice’s vital work.

Irfon Rees, Chief Executive of Tŷ Hafan, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are deeply honoured that Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales has become Patron of Tŷ Hafan. It was an absolute pleasure to welcome her to our hospice for the first time today. As our Patron, Her Royal Highness will be an inspiration for children with life-shortening conditions and their families, our dedicated staff and volunteers, and everyone who so generously supports us.”

Rees went on to highlight the heartbreaking reality faced by thousands of families in Wales, adding, “No parent ever imagines that their child’s life will be short. Sadly, this is the reality for many. We can’t stop this from happening, but together we can make sure that no one lives their child’s short life alone.”

The Princess of Wales’s patronage is a testament to her ongoing dedication to causes that support children and families. Her involvement with Tŷ Hafan is expected to shine a spotlight on the hospice’s work, encouraging greater public support and ensuring that more families in Wales can access the care and compassion they so desperately need.

As Tŷ Hafan continues to provide a lifeline to families across Wales, the addition of The Princess of Wales as Patron marks a new chapter in the hospice’s story—one filled with hope, inspiration, and the promise of a brighter future for those who need it most.
