The Beacon Summit kicks off across Cardiff

Cardiff hosts Beacons Summit, a FREE music industry conference for young people.

Cardiff is set to welcome hundreds of aspiring and emerging musicians, producers, managers, and promoters for the Beacons Summit, a music industry conference curated and designed by young people. The event, which will take place on February 21st and 22nd, will feature workshops, panels, keynote talks, live music, and networking opportunities across multiple venues in the city centre.

The Beacons Summit is organised by Beacons Cymru, a youth-led organisation that aims to empower and inspire young people in the Welsh music scene. The summit is part of their wider programme of activities, which include mentoring, training, showcases, and festivals. Beacons Cymru was founded in 2020 by a group of young music enthusiasts who wanted to create more opportunities and support for their peers in the industry.

Last year, over 500 people signed up to attend and engage in workshops, interactive panels, thought-provoking discussions, industry networking and live music. This year, across numerous iconic music venues in Cardiff including Cardiff Utilita Arena, The Gate, Clwb Ifor Bach, Paradise Gardens, JOMEC (Cardiff University) and Porter’s, SUMMIT will provide a unique opportunity for attendees to learn from and connect with key music industry experts from a diverse range of backgrounds and experiences from across the UK.

The summit’s theme for 2024 is “Close the App, Make da Ting”, a phrase coined by Elijah, a London-based DJ, producer, and label owner, who will deliver one of the keynote talks at the event. The theme encourages young people to take action and pursue their creative goals, rather than being distracted by social media and other online platforms. The summit will also explore topics such as diversity, sustainability, mental health, and innovation in the music industry.

Some of the highlights of the summit include:

  • A live A&R session with Jamila Scott, the head of A&R at Method Records, who will give feedback and advice to selected artists who submit their demos in advance.
  • A panel discussion on the future of Welsh music, featuring representatives from BBC Horizons, FOCUS Wales, Welsh Music Prize, and PRS Foundation.
  • A workshop on how to write a press release and pitch to media outlets, led by Bethan Elfyn, a radio presenter and journalist.
  • A presentation on how to make money from music streaming, sponsored by Spotify.
  • A showcase of emerging Welsh talent, curated by BBC Horizons, FOCUS Wales, and Resonant & Transform, featuring performances by GWCCI, Skylrk, Medeni, CHROMA, Gillie, Half Happy, Siula, and more.

The summit will also offer opportunities for young people to network with industry professionals, peers, and mentors, and to access resources and support from various organisations and partners. The summit is free to attend, but registration is required. Tickets are available on the Beacons Cymru website1.

The Beacons Summit is supported by Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government, Creative Cardiff, FOR Cardiff, and Cardiff Council. The summit’s venues include Utilita Arena, JOMEC Cardiff, The Gate, Clwb Ifor Bach, Porter’s Cardiff, and The Sustainable Studio.

The Beacons Summit is a unique and exciting event that aims to inspire and empower the next generation of Welsh music makers and shakers. Don’t miss this chance to learn, connect, and create with some of the best in the business.
