Ruba-Dub-Dub: How bathing is boosting men’s mental health

Helpu Cymru, the men’s mental health hub for Wales is marking National Bath Bomb Day on Sunday bycalling for men to take more baths!

The National suicide prevention organisation has teamed up with ethical cosmetics brand LUSH to encourage men to take a moment, drop a bath bomb and embrace some quiet time by having a sudsy soak.

Helpu Cymru supports men grappling with their mental wellbeing and suggests that anything that allows for mindfulness can pave the way for better mental health. Founded by a group of volunteers who have personally encountered mental health challenges, Helpu provides a safe space for sharing stories, support, and resources for those in need.

The bath bomb was invented in 1989 by Mo Constantine, co-founder of LUSH Cosmetics, who created the first bath bomb in her garden shed in Dorset. Since then, the fragrant beauty treats have become a staple in self-care routines worldwide.

Ian Smith founder of Helpu Cymru, says: “Men sometimes take life a bit too seriously – I know I do. So,chucking a bit of fizz in a bath might sound like it will have no impact on your mental healthwhatsoever.  But it might just provide enough time out to reframe your problems and get some perspective.”

The One Show presenter Mo Jannah, from Cardiff, is a Helpu Cymru ambassador and says: “I’ve interviewed rock stars and wrestled telly deadlines, but nothing beats the serenity of a bath. It’s one of my defenses against burnout.”

Welsh instagrammer and Health Psychologist Kyle McGovern from Blackwood added:

“Studies show that regular warm baths can help ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. Plus, they’re a game-changer for sleep. And let’s face it, a lot of men are burning the candle at both ends. A warm bath before bed helps your body know when it’s time to rest, leading to better sleep quality and more energy for the next day.

“Just having a proper bath is underrated. It helps lower your stress because it reduces cortisol, that stress hormone that makes everything feel overwhelming. The heat also boosts your mood by triggering serotonin, so you feel a bit more balanced. If you bathe before bed, your body cools down afterwards, which makes it easier to sleep.

“It also switches on your body’s chill mode — the opposite of fight or flight. And weirdly, even if you’re on your own, the warmth can trigger oxytocin — that’s the hormone that makes you feel connected — so it can even help with feelings of loneliness. It’s simple, but it works.”

LUSH Cardiff Spa & Store Manager Elizabeth Mills said:

LUSH staff member: “We’re thrilled to partner with Helpu Cymru. They’re doing an awesome job for men in Wales. We know that many women can see the benefit of a bath but it’s great to be encouraging men to bath too! Bathing is a gateway to relaxation and better mental health.”
