Review: Rick Astley Charms Cardiff Castle

Rick Astley brought an unforgettable evening to Cardiff Castle last night, blending nostalgia with fresh energy that had the audience dancing from start to finish. The ’80s icon, known for his deep voice and timeless hits, delivered a performance that was as heartwarming as it was electrifying.

The Lightning Seeds

The night kicked off with a fantastic set by The Lightning Seeds, who played a number of their classics. Despite the timing clash with England’s Euro semi-final against the Netherlands, they wisely chose to skip “Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)” out of respect for the Welsh audience. They closed their set with “Life of Riley,” perfectly setting the stage for Rick Astley.

From the moment Astley took the stage, the crowd was in the palm of his hand. Opening with a mix of his classic hits and newer songs, he effortlessly bridged the decades. Of course, “Never Gonna Give You Up” had everyone singing along, but it was his heartfelt interactions with the audience that truly stood out. Rick’s genuine warmth and humour made the massive venue feel intimate and personal.

A highlight of the night was his surprise cover of AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” showcasing his versatility and adding a rock twist to the evening. The backdrop of Cardiff Castle added a magical atmosphere, making the night even more special.

Rick Astley’s performance was a reminder of why he remains a beloved figure in music. His voice, charisma, and connection with the audience created a night full of joy and memories. What an experience, and what a night!
