This fun-filled show brings the animated film to life with a burst of colour, music, and humour that had the entire audience buzzing with excitement and giggles from start to finish.

The story follows Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippo—beloved residents of New York’s Central Park Zoo—as they unexpectedly find themselves on a wild journey. Marty’s curiosity about the world beyond the zoo gates sets the stage for an adventure full of laughter and excitement, with the help of some crafty puppet penguins. The cast at the Wales Millennium Centre delivered standout performances, filling the stage with infectious energy. Alex and Marty, played by Joseph Hewlett and Francisco Gomes in particular, showcased a bond that was believable but endearing. Their dance numbers were electric, with Marty’s zebra grooves and Alex’s lion-like moves setting the stage alight.

One of the highlights of this show is the incredible puppetry design by Max Humphries and puppet direction by Emma Brunton. The intricate designs and the performers’ ability to manoeuvre these large costumes while dancing and singing were jaw-dropping. The synchronisation of movement and voice was flawless, making the characters feel real and relatable.

This musical is a game of two halves. The first act, while setting up the story, was a bit slower-paced. However, the second half more than made up for it, ramping up the energy and excitement. The iconic “I Like to Move It, Move It” scene featuring King Julien who was played by stand in Connor Keetley had the entire audience clapping and dancing in their seats. The upbeat music and enthusiastic performance turned the theatre into a lively dance party.

Madagascar: The Musical strikes a perfect balance of humor for both kids and adults. The playful jokes and slapstick comedy had the children in stitches, while clever nods and adult humor added an extra layer of enjoyment for parents. The mix of fun and laughter makes it a fantastic choice for a family outing.

The combination of talented performances, stunning puppetry, and catchy music creates an experience that is both heartwarming and exhilarating.
