Review: Friends! The Musical Parody – Could It Be Any Funnier?

If you’re a Friends fan who grew up spending Friday nights on the sofa with Central Perk, this one is right up your street. Friends! The Musical Parody at the New Theatre is more than just a nostalgic trip through ten seasons, it’s a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud love letter to one of the most iconic sitcoms ever made.

From the moment you walk in, the show sets itself apart. It opens as if you’re at a live TV recording, with crew moving around the set and warm-up host Kip whipping the audience into shape. It’s a clever touch that instantly gets everyone involved. The laughs feel real, almost like being part of a studio audience, and it creates a brilliant connection between the cast and the crowd.

The show then races through the entire Friends timeline, from Rachel’s unforgettable entrance into Central Perk to Monica and Chandler leaving the apartment for life in the suburbs. It’s a whistle-stop tour packed with iconic moments, jokes and milestones.

It’s worth remembering this is a parody. The cast are not trying to do perfect impressions, and that’s exactly why it works. The characters are exaggerated just enough to poke fun while still feeling familiar. Eva Hope and Alicia Belgarde shine as Rachel and Monica, capturing their look and tone brilliantly, while Alicia’s “I know” moments land perfectly.

Daniel Parkinson is a standout as Chandler, leaning into the physical comedy with exaggerated mannerisms that suit the stage perfectly. His turn as Janice is just as memorable, delivering that unmistakable “Oh. My. God.” with all the over-the-top energy it deserves. Edward Leigh as Gunther is another highlight, breaking the fourth wall with a hilarious song about being noticed that feels like the story Gunther never got to tell on screen.

The production moves quickly and smoothly, jumping from scene to scene without losing momentum. Costumes, wigs and make-up are spot on, bringing back that 90s and early 2000s style, while every familiar character and moment gets its time, from Marcel the monkey to the duck and chick.

What makes the show work so well is that it balances nostalgia with comedy. You know the jokes, you know the story, but seeing it all played out in this exaggerated, musical form feels fresh and genuinely funny.

Whether you’re a lifelong fan or someone who has never seen an episode, there’s plenty to enjoy. It’s energetic, chaotic in the best way and packed with catchy songs and big laughs.

This is one of those shows you have to see, This show is never stuck in second gear,

Friends! The Musical Parody is at the New Theatre until 2nd May. If you can get a ticket, it’s well worth it.
