Pretty Woman The Musical- Review : Showcase of Vocal Excellence

The musical adaptation of the well known and well loved 80’s themed film “Pretty Woman” graces the stage of Cardiff’s Millennium Centre, and it is nothing short of a vocal masterclass. The show, which features original music by the legendary Bryan Adams and his longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance, brings the iconic story to life with a fresh new feel. Full of 80’s fashion, it is a snippet of Hollywood that you don’t want to miss.

Amber Davies, taking on the role of Vivian Ward, showcases her vocal prowess and does well to down play her well known dancing skills in scenes where she has to look like she has never danced ballroom before. Her well acted portrayal of the street worker character, shows both strength and vulnerability. Oliver Savile, as Edward, complements her with his rich, commanding tones, creating a dynamic and compelling onstage chemistry. It is easy to forget about Julia Roberts and Richard Gere as these characters felt like they were actually made for Davies and Savile.

Ore Oduba is charismatic, charming and note perfect in every role he plays in the show and he really plays them all. He even magically appears in the Orchestra Pitt for one highly amusing moment.

The rest of the cast also demonstrate exceptional vocal talent, with Natalie Paris standing out as Kit De Luca. Her voice is nothing short of spectacular. She makes it very clear she has arrived every time she starts to sing. There is absolutely no escaping the power and sensational tone of her voice.

The ensemble keep the great choreography tight and flawless whilst bringing incredible opera voices in one scene and brilliant slap stick style comedy in others.

If you are wondering if there are scenes between a hooker and her rich man that you would find uncomfortable to watch with family, there is no need to worry as cleverly timed lighting fades and silhouettes allow us to see very little yet imply so much.

Overall, “Pretty Woman: The Musical” at Cardiff’s Millennium Centre is a showcase of vocal excellence, with the music of Adams and Vallance providing the perfect backdrop for this timeless love story. The cast’s voices soared, capturing the hearts of the audience and leaving them with a sense of joy and upliftment all the way to the final note of the final song “Pretty Woman” and beyond.
