New Hip Hop Exhibition Hits National Museum Cardiff: “Hip Hop – A Welsh Story” Opens This July

This summer, National Museum Cardiff is dropping the beat with a groundbreaking new exhibition celebrating over 40 years of Hip Hop culture in Wales.

Hip Hop: A Welsh Story opens on 19 July 2025, offering a deep dive into the evolution of Hip Hop in Wales—from the early underground pioneers to today’s leading voices and future stars. The exhibition shines a spotlight on how Hip Hop has shaped Welsh identity and creative culture through music, dance, fashion, graffiti and storytelling.

Curated by DJ and cultural advisor Kaptin Barrett, the exhibition brings together first-hand accounts and voices from across the Welsh Hip Hop scene, including iconic artists like Llwybr LlaethogDJ Jaffa, and Ladies of Rage.

Visitors can expect an immersive experience, with interactive displays that invite you to try your hand at graffiti, drop your own rap verse, or browse through a nostalgic record shop setup. The exhibition encourages active participation in the culture—not just observation.

Kaptin Barrett said:

“A lot of people don’t realise how much Hip Hop has become a part of Welsh history and culture. For many, it’s integral to their sense of Welsh identity. I hope this exhibition breaks down preconceptions and opens the space to those who haven’t always felt represented here.”

Kath Davies, Director of Collections and Research at Museum Wales, added:

“What makes this exhibition extra special is that it’s shaped by the people who’ve lived it.”

The exhibition runs until 22 February 2026 and is free to visit, though pre-booking is recommended through the museum’s website. For anyone with even a passing interest in Welsh music, street art or social history, Hip Hop: A Welsh Story is a must-visit.
