Murder in the Dark at the New Theatre

Do you fancy a game of Murder in the Dark?

Written by Torben Betts and starring famous faces such as Susie Blake (As Seen on TV) and Tom Chambers (Casualty, Waterloo Road, and Strictly champion!), Murder in the Dark promises to take you on a spine-chilling journey of twists and turns. It’s New Year’s Eve, Danny Sierra and his family find themselves lodging on a farm in the middle of nowhere following an unfortunate car crash. We follow Danny and his dysfunctional family as they are forced to spend the evening together and talk through their issues. As a former popstar, Danny battles guilt for choosing to chase fame and fortune over focusing on his family.

The family are taken in by Mrs Bateman, played by Susie Blake, who witnesses the crash and helps them seek refuge at her nearby farm. She is hospitable in giving them a place to stay and even cooking her infamous mushroom soup. However, there is an air of strangeness about Mrs Bateman, and her lodgings are shut off to the outside world with no phone signal; the perfect setting for horror to pursue.

Audiences are asked to take an oath of secrecy about the show, so as not to spoil it for others. The main thing I will say is to expect the unexpected! If you like to get out your inner detective, read between the lines and focus on the clues that one may usually overlook. The show does not turn out how you think it will, but they will certainly lead you into false ideas.

The acting in the show is nothing short of fabulous, the whole creative team have done a brilliant job at bringing this story to life. I will say that the production value isn’t as high as other plays that I’ve seen, but I think this show overall is unapologetically cheesy in both the storyline and the way that they present it. The script is well written and there are some side-splitting moments of comedy throughout, which are great for breaking up the tension of the horrors that are unfolding.

An evening out watching a fun and surprising play, accompanied by a fresh drink from the bar and an interval ice-cream, is the perfect kind of evening, in my opinion. You can do just that by catching Murder in the Dark at the New Theatre from now until Saturday 2nd March.
