Lonely Tree of Llanberis In The Running For Woodland Trust’s ‘Tree Of The Year’ 2025

Time is running out to cast your vote for one of Wales’ most photographed natural landmarks. With less than three weeks to go, the much-loved Lonely Tree of Llanberis is hoping to be crowned the Woodland Trust’s UK Tree of the Year 2025.

Perched on the pebbled edge of Llyn Padarn and framed by the dramatic peaks of Eryri, the small silver birch has become an icon of North Wales. Its striking silhouette reflected in the still waters has made it a favourite subject for walkers, artists, and photographers from around the world.

This year’s competition theme, Rooted in Culture, celebrates trees that shape the identity of their landscapes and communities. Though one of the youngest contenders, the Lonely Tree has survived against the odds to become a symbol of Llanberis — and it’s the only Welsh entry on this year’s shortlist.

Kylie Jones Mattock, director of Coed Cadw (the Woodland Trust in Wales), said: “The Lonely Tree is a perfect example of how even the smallest tree can inspire awe, creativity and pride. With just weeks left, we’d love to see people across the nation get behind this little birch with a big personality.”

Voting closes at 11:59pm on 19 September 2025, with the winner announced on 26 September. The victorious tree will go on to represent the UK in the European Tree of the Year contest.
