In a scene that has seen so many night clubs and Music venues close in recent years it’s always refreshing to see some club nights breaking the mold and still putting on quality parties in the city. One of Cardiff’s longest-running and Iconic club nights, Lamerica, is celebrating an impressive milestone of 27 years of dance floor history with a rooftop celebration. The birthday-bash will take place at District Nightclub on GreyFriars Road, promising a night of soulful house , disco and UK garage from some of the scene’s most respected pioneers.

Headlining the birthday bash are none other than Bobby & Steve, twin brothers and trailblazers of London’s soulful house scene. Celebrating their own landmark — 40 years in the music industry — the Laviniere brothers were at the heart of the capital’s legendary 1980s warehouse party movement, playing alongside icons like Norman Jay, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, Jazzy B and Trevor Nelson. Their decades-spanning influence as DJs, promoters and radio presenters has made them international ambassadors for soulful, uplifting dance music.

From the Emporium to rooftops:
Lamerica was founded in July 1998, launching its first night at the now-legendary Emporium on St Mary Street — the same venue immortalised in cult film Human Traffic. Co-founder and resident DJ Craig Bartlett recalls how it all began:

“Not in our wildest dreams did we envisage still putting on events 27 years later. Back then, there were no advance tickets, no social media — just months of flyer runs and word of mouth. We were just hoping to ‘get away with it’.”

That first night laid the foundations for what would become a cultural staple in the Welsh capital. Over the years, Lamerica has brought some of the world’s most exciting and soulful DJs to Cardiff, introducing new generations to deep, funky, and uplifting house music.

Still dancing after all these years:
While the scale of the nights may have changed, the passion remains the same. Lamerica continues to draw crowds who, as Bartlett puts it, “simply live to dance.”

“To still be able to do what we do is wonderful, albeit not as often and on a smaller scale. We’re so thankful to everyone who still makes the effort to attend. We can’t wait to celebrate up on the roof – or in the basement if the weather doesn’t play ball – with the legends Bobby & Steve.”

The rooftop party is expected to be one of the highlights of Cardiff’s summer nightlife calendar — a celebration not just of Lamerica, but of the enduring power of house and disco to bring people together.

Tickets for the event are expected to sell fast, so early booking is advised. This isn’t just another club night — it’s a celebration of Cardiff’s music heritage, and the people who have kept it dancing for nearly three decades.
