Inspector Morse is Back in a brand new theatre show coming to Cardiff

Inspector Morse fans are in for a treat this year as the legendary detective steps out of television and onto the stage for the first time in a major new production. Inspector Morse: House of Ghosts arrives at New Theatre Cardiff from Tuesday 27 January to Saturday 31 January 2026, bringing a gripping new mystery to life.

Produced by Birmingham Rep and The Belgrade Theatre, House of Ghosts promises a fresh take on the detective widely hailed as the greatest British sleuth of all time. With nods to the classic series and enough new surprises to keep even long time fans guessing, it looks set to be a highlight in Cardiff’s theatre calendar.

The story opens with a shocking moment. A young actress collapses and dies on stage during a performance, sparking what appears to be a tragic accident. When Detective Chief Inspector Morse is called in, the investigation quickly reveals something far more sinister. With DS Lewis at his side, Morse follows a trail that leads not only to hidden motives and buried secrets, but to events in his own past from twenty five years earlier.

This is the first original stage adaptation of the iconic detective, written by Alma Cullen, who penned several episodes of the acclaimed ITV series. Her previous work on the show includes favourites such as The Infernal SerpentFat Chanceand The Death of the Self, all inspired by Colin Dexter’s beloved characters.

The production reunites Tom Chambers with director Anthony Banks following their collaboration on Dial M for Murder. Chambers, known for Father Brown and his winning turn on Strictly Come Dancing, stars as Morse. He is joined by actor and rapper Tachia Newall, who plays DS Lewis. Viewers will recognise him from Waterloo RoadCoronation Street and Doctor Who, and together the pair bring a fresh dynamic to the famous detective duo.

Director, Anthony Banks says:

“I’m very excited to start working with this fantastic cast who will bring these much-loved characters to life and make them their own. Alma Cullen’s original Morse story contains a play-within-a-play – an inspired concept for a murder mystery which reveals the similarities between playing a part when acting and covering-up a crime!”

Tickets are expected to move fast. Fans of MorseLewisEndeavour or simply a good old fashioned mystery will not want to miss it.
