I Should Be So Lucky: The Musical

What would you do if you were jilted at the alter? Would you hide away, or would you follow in the footsteps of Ella and take your mum, nan, sister, and best friends on your honeymoon? Sounds dramatic, doesn’t it!? It certainly is, and it’s how the story of I Should Be So Lucky begins; we follow Ella as she attempts to overcome her heartbreak in a lovers paradise in Turkey. With beautiful men around her, and her ex-husband-to-be chasing for forgiveness, who will Ella eventually end up with? It’s a choice between Hand on Your Heart for a new romance, or Better the Devil You Know with the man who left her at the altar.

Featuring the iconic sounds of Stock Aitken Waterman, you’ll be blessed with music from pop-royalty such as Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Jason Donovan, Bananarama, and so many more! It’s literally impossible not to tap your toe along to this musical; you’ll be itching to get up from your seat and have a boogie, so it’s a welcomed relief when you’re invited to stand and dance along to the closing number. Not to spoil too much, but you may see an appearance from (a digital) Queen Kylie herself, taking on a fairy godmother like role to guide Ella through her journey. Speaking of icons, Pete Waterman himself made a surprise appearance in the audience on opening night in Cardiff, clearly beaming with pride over the show and happily taking the time to talk to and take pictures with fans.

This show combines three of life’s guilt-free pleasures; musicals, cheesy rom-coms, and Kylie Minogue, making it into the perfect musical experience. With big emphasis on the cheese, be ready to let your guard down and expect the silliest comedy and one-liners that will have your cheeks and sides sore from laughter. Ella’s family and friends are so much fun, I wish I could go on honeymoon with them. There’s always a worry with shows like this that the music doesn’t sit well within it, but that’s not the case in I Should Be So Lucky, the songs fit perfectly for the situations that are unfolding in the story. I also want to take a moment to talk about the set: it’s spectacular and is full of a myriad of hearts, glitter, and colour – it’s a teenage dream! Honestly, it’s how my younger self would have decorated the family home if I was let-loose, and I mean that in the best way possible.

Kylie and the gang are in Cardiff with I Should Be So Lucky at the Wales Millennium Centre until Saturday 2nd December. You would be unlucky to miss out on this one! You can get your tickets and find out more here: https://www.wmc.org.uk/en/whats-on/2023/i-should-be-so-lucky
