Groundbreaking Skateboarding VR Experience Coming to Wales Millennium Centre in 2027

A new immersive virtual reality experience exploring the history of British skateboarding culture is coming in 2027, with Wales Millennium Centre helping bring the project to life.

Called Small Revolutions, the groundbreaking experience will take visitors on a journey through the stories, culture and rebellious spirit of skateboarding in the UK, including the history of London’s iconic Skatespot Southbank

The project is being created by filmmaker Darren Emerson and East City Films, the award-winning creative team behind In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats, an immersive VR experience that transported audiences back to the early days of Britain’s rave scene.

Now, they’re turning their attention to skateboarding and the communities that helped shape it.

Unlike traditional exhibitions, Small Revolutions will be a free-roaming virtual reality experience, allowing visitors to physically move around and explore a digitally created world.

The experience will celebrate the people, places and stories behind British skate culture, looking at how skateboarding became much more than just a sport.

One of the locations featured will be London’s Southbank Undercroft, a legendary skate spot beneath the Southbank Centre that has been at the heart of the UK’s skateboarding scene for decades.

Known for its graffiti-covered walls, concrete ramps and generations of skateboarders, the Undercroft has become an important part of British youth culture.

Through immersive storytelling and virtual reality technology, Small Revolutions aims to bring that history to life in a completely new way.

The project comes from the same creative team responsible for In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats, which explored the underground rave movement of the late 1980s.

That experience allowed audiences to step back in time and discover the music, people and atmosphere of Britain’s early acid house scene.

With Small Revolutions, Darren Emerson and East City Films will explore another influential British subculture, capturing the creativity, independence and community spirit that have helped define skateboarding over the years.

The new experience is being co-commissioned by Wales Millennium Centre, London’s Southbank Centre and Milton Keynes City Council.

The collaboration brings together three organisations to support an ambitious project combining cultural history, storytelling and immersive technology.

Small Revolutions is expected to launch in 2027, although further details about dates, locations and tickets have yet to be announced.

For anyone interested in skateboarding, street culture or immersive experiences, this is certainly one to watch.
