Everyman Theatre Cardiff is bringing a unique and interactive theatre experience for the whole family to Canton’s Victoria Park this Bank Holiday weekend. Victoria Park Through The Ages is a community-driven exploration of the 125-year history of the park told through music, song, and storytelling.

Audience members arriving to this magical tour through the last 125 years will be led by guides to meet and interact with characters and moments from the Park’s history, including Billy the Seal, who briefly escaped from the Victoria Park Zoo in 1927 and whose story became the subject of a song by Frank Hennessy. The other zoo animals will be excited to meet the audience, too – although punters are advised to watch out for the cheeky monkey!

Everyman Theatre Cardiff has spent half a year working with people from the local community to create a unique piece of theatre celebrating Victoria Park’s history and contribution to Cardiff. The words, music, and performance have been fully devised by Canton locals, with guidance and support from the project’s Artistic Director Wayne Vincent and a team of experienced Everyman members.

“When we started in January with no scripts, no actors, and no costumes, I was excited but apprehensive,” said Vincent. “But this has been one of the best teams I have worked with.”

The eight-month creative process has been supported by a Third Sector Resilience Fund grant from the Welsh Council For Voluntary Action, with additional sponsorship from Victoria Park Mazda, Dragon Signs, Lovell Homes and Santander.

Cast member Michael Dibble added: “Victoria Park has always been there for me and given me so many happy memories. I am delighted to be part of the Everyman team working in harmony and learning together to give something back to the local community. Watching each scene develop from scratch has been jaw-dropping and above all I have had lots of fun learning new skills.”

Entry is free! Audience members are advised to arrive 30 minutes early to receive your sticker so that the “tour guides” know you are in their party. You are also heartily invited to consider coming in fancy dress – animal costumes or Victorian-themed garb are especially encouraged!

Performances take place at the following times:

17:00 Friday 26 August
14:00 Saturday 27 August
14:00 Sunday 28 August

Friday’s performance will be attended by Rosaleen Moriarty-Simmonds OBE, High Sheriff of South Glamorgan, who will speak during the show’s finale.
