Fly By Night

Raise your glass to a sumptuous new wine bar and unique basement cocktail concept, launching on High Street soon.

‘Fly by Night’ is a new venture from David Abbot owner of 10 Mill Lane (Formerly Bars) and one of Cardiff’s most creative mixologists David (Fitz) Adams. The pair have teamed up to create a sophisticated venue in an area which has been attracting plenty of high end bars and restaurants of late.

After many years of creating bespoke cocktails, training bartenders, and opening and running successful bars, the team are bringing an entirely new wine and cocktail bar experience to Cardiff’s drink lovers.

Fly by Night is a wine bar with one goal: getting people excited about trying something new. With a constantly evolving and carefully curated selection of more than 25 wines to choose from, reasonably priced by the glass, they hope to bring down the barriers that usually stop people enjoying great wines.

Many of the wines on the menu are uniquely sourced and will be served by the glass at a price that won’t break the bank. They are available to be enjoyed in the bar’s relaxed surroundings , along with a specially paired bite to eat, supplied by the chef Matt Hudson (from the Flora) starting from 50p – £2.50.

Plans for the decor are said to include a giant cherry blossom tree installation that will reach across the ceiling of the bar. There will also be plenty of dark wood and low lighting to help create a smart visual effect.

David Adams, one of Fly by Night’s creators, said “It’s been a project I have been working on for two years and I am really excited to bring the Italian ( Bacari Bar) culture to Cardiff.”

Downstairs, Fly by Night will be styled as a post-apocalyptic, Mad Max-style underground bar. It has been described as a “dive bar from the far side of the galaxy, a retro-futuristic drinking hole for Space Cowboys and Laser Queens with a Vietnam soundtrack and more rum and whisky than you can shake a power converter at. A Neo-Tiki oasis for smugglers, intergalactic outlaws and rebels.”

Mixology isn’t rocket science, but the cocktail menu at Fly by Night will have 20 different cocktails based on the moons and planets in our solar system. Drinks like Lava Flow and Gear Head already sound out of this world, and we can’t wait to boldly go where no man has gone before.

The Fly by Night team have worked with local illustrators Jessica Zschorn & Holly Akrill to create an accompanying postcard for each drink, sent from someone from the planet the drink derives from.
David said, “There are plenty of places in Cardiff that are looking back at classic concepts or the prohibition era and they are all great, but we want to buck the trend and create something that is more futuristic and almost wasteland.”

Ones thing’s for sure, Fly By Night will serve more than just your average Pina Colada!
