FA Community Shield Heading to Cardiff This Summer

Cardiff is set to host one of football’s biggest curtain-raisers, as the 2026 FA Community Shield comes to the Principality Stadium on Sunday 16 August.

It marks the first time in 20 years that the traditional season opener has been played in the Welsh capital, bringing top-level English football back to one of the UK’s most iconic stadiums.

The Community Shield is usually held at Wembley the weekend before the Premier League kicks off. However, due to scheduling changes for the 2026–27 season, and pre-planned concerts at Wembley, the fixture has been moved to Cardiff this year.

The Premier League season is set to begin the following weekend, from Saturday 22 August, making the Cardiff clash the official start of the new football campaign.

The Principality Stadium is no stranger to major football events. It previously hosted the Community Shield six times between 2001 and 2006, as well as a number of other high-profile matches, offering a neutral venue and one of the largest capacities in the UK.

For fans, it is a rare chance to see the season’s opening silverware contested in Cardiff, with the city once again stepping onto the big stage for a major football event.
