Review: Disney’s Aladdin Wales Millennium Centre

We caught the magic carpet ride that is Disney’s Aladdin at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, and let me tell you, it’s a whole new world of fun!

Disney’s Aladdin, currently on its first UK and Ireland tour at the Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff, presents a theatrical spectacle that is Shining, Shimmering, Splendid. The performance, featuring all the beloved songs from the original cartoon and additional compositions, offers a captivating experience for all ages. Aladdin the Musical is the Brightest, glitziest, sparkliest, most theatre-magic musical you might ever see in your life!

The centrepiece of the show is undoubtedly the 10-minute showstopper “Friend Like Me,” performed by Yeukayi Ushe, who embodies the character of Genie. This elaborate ensemble piece, featuring a nod to Disney’s 100-year legacy through a classic musical medley of Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Little Mermaid and more, is a standout moment in the production with the whole cast putting everything in and making the audience’s jaw drop. You Ain’t ever seen a song like Friend Like Me.

Disney’s animated Aladdin was released in 1992 and It immediately captured young hearts and minds with its sweet and clever music (by Alan Menken) and Robin Williams’ frenetic, winning performance as a powerful genie who helps the hero win the girl. The stage version is based on this version and weaves a romantic subplot between the street rat character, portrayed by Gavin Adams, and Princess Jasmine, played by Desmond Cthabel. Additionally, the introduction of Aladdin’s companions, Babkak, Omar, and Kassim in replace of Carpet and Abu, provides a new dynamic to the story, replacing characters from the animated version.

This new trio of Babkak, Omar, and Kassim, portrayed by Nelson Bettencourt, Nay-Nay, and a local talent from Penarth Adam Taylor, respectively, adds a layer of humour and camaraderie. Their performance, particularly the sword-fighting number in Act Two, is a notable highlight. It was also great to see Nay-nay back on stage in Cardiff this Christmas, having seen him last year in Snow White at the New Theatre as prince Charming.

Gavin Adams as Aladdin

Gavin Adams, in his first professional stage role as Aladdin, delivers a commendable performance, capturing the character’s essence convincingly. Yeukayi Ushe’s portrayal of Genie, incorporating elements reminiscent of both Robin Williams and Will Smith, brings a lively and engaging quality to the production.

A special mention to Angelo Paragfoso, as Iago, who injects comedic elements reminiscent of a pantomime, providing an entertaining dimension to the overall performance.

The inclusion of classic songs, alongside the introduction of a new ballad, “Proud of Your Boy,” enriches the musical repertoire and gives the show a new depth. The technical brilliance of the magic carpet ride in “A Whole New World” is a noteworthy technical achievement, which was given the seal of approval with whispering comments ” How did they do that” complemented by the genuine chemistry between Adams and Cathabel, who both came from the Royal Academy of music in London.

One of the best songs of the night besides “Friend Like Me,” was the new song ‘High Adventure’ by The trio of Babkak, Omar, and Kassim. This number in Act two not only captivates with its gritty, catchy tune becomes a memorable highlight due to its choreography.

The incorporation of sword fighting within the choreography adds a dynamic layer to the performance, elevating the visual and auditory experience for the audience. The synchronised clang of metal swords, perfectly timed to the beat of the music, showcases a level of precision and skill in the choreography that merits commendation.

The stage design, though simple, effectively transports the audience to various settings in Agrabah, with the Cave of Wonders being a particular standout. The costumes, characterised by their opulence and vibrant colors, contribute to the visual spectacle.

While the production faced initial sound issues, these were transient, and the cast delivered a flawless performance overall. Aladdin offers a compelling and entertaining experience, showcasing the dedication of the cast and crew. The production is a fitting choice for a festive outing. The show runs at the Wales Millennium Centre until January 14, providing an excellent opportunity for friends, family of all ages to immerse themselves in the magic of Disney’s Aladdin and We may not have a magic lamp, but Disney’s Aladdin sure did make our nostalgic wishes come true for us.
