Courts Magical Winter Wonderland Returns

A beautifully restored Tudor-period mansion on the edge of Cardiff and Penarth has once again transformed its grounds into one of the most enchanting winter destinations in South Wales. Courts in Penarth, set just off the Cogan Spur, has reopened its much-loved Winter Wonderland — and it is more stunning than ever.

The gardens have been turned into a festive haven filled with atmosphere and charm. Visitors will find glowing fire pits, cosy wooden pods, and a picture-perfect hot chocolate and coffee van housed in a vintage Dutch Citroën H. A covered seating area brings the alpine theme to life with vintage skis, sheepskin rugs, candles and rows of twinkling trees, all warmed by plenty of heaters to keep winter nights comfortable.

The décor is exceptional. Inside the marquee-style seating area, crisp white booths sit among snow-covered Christmas trees, lanterns and rustic signs, giving every corner a touch of festive nostalgia. It’s the kind of setting that feels like stepping straight into a Christmas card.

Alongside the scenery, Courts offers a packed food and drink line-up. Their outdoor cocktail bar serves winter warmers, themed cocktails and large steins of German beer. From the kitchen, guests can order comforting seasonal dishes including loaded fries, baked Camembert, and German-style sausages.

The Deers Lodges — a collection of cosy wooden cabins fitted with blankets, heaters and soft lighting — are available on a walk-in basis, making them perfect for relaxed festive catch-ups.

They plan to host a full programme of festive events this year. Expect bottomless brunches, wreath-making workshops, charity quizzes and lively party nights, making the venue a go-to spot throughout the season. And for families, a special visit from “the old guy himself” is scheduled for 22 December.

The main restaurant inside the mansion remains open as usual, offering a refined dining experience alongside the outdoor festivities.

With its magical ambience, great food and striking attention to detail, Courts may well be one of Cardiff’s most charming winter destinations this year.
