Cardiff’s popular indie coffee brand, Brodies Coffee Co, has just announced it’s taking over the iconic Gatekeeper Cottage in Bute Park — the cosy café spot formerly home to the award-winning Pettigrew Tea Rooms.
Well known for its original tiny coffee shop tucked beside the National Museum at the top of Gorsedd Gardens, Brodies has become a local favourite since starting out in a camper van over a decade ago. Their wooden hut is the city’s smallest permanent coffee shop, serving up quality brews with from one of Cardiff’s most peaceful green corners.
The company was founded by Ian Brodie, and his wife Danni, who’ve built their brand around more than just coffee. Known for serving brews in cups printed with uplifting messages like “You Got This”, they’ve also spent the last decade quietly donating coffees to the homeless — a testament to their commitment to community as much as caffeine.
The couple has successful sites on North Road called Bricks N’ Mortar, Heath Park and Gorsedd Gardens and this exciting new chapter will see them expand their footprint even further into the city’s green spaces. In a post shared on social media, Brodies confirmed they’ve taken on the site at the entrance of Bute Park and will be bringing over the existing tearoom team to help with the transition.
Speaking about the move Brodies told us : “We’re really excited to have the opportunity to breathe new life into an iconic Cardiff building and have the tea rooms team join us as we start this next chapter. Whilst we don’t have a timeframe just yet, our goal is to be up and running for Summer so people can enjoy the beautiful outdoor space! (The inside will also be beautiful for the incredibly unlikely scenario of a wet Welsh summer)”
There’s no official opening date just yet, but fans are encouraged to follow @brodies_coffee on Instagram to stay in the loop. One thing’s for sure — with Brodies moving in, the coffee in Bute Park is about to get even better.
