It’s been another dramatic few days in The Hundred for Welsh Fire, with standout individual performances, injury setbacks and a crucial match that could define the season.
The Welsh Fire Women currently sit sixth in the table following defeats to MI London at Sophia Gardens and Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston.
There have still been plenty of positives, with impressive performances from Georgia Voll and Sophie Devine. However, the side has suffered a major blow after captain Devine was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament through injury.
In her absence, Georgia Wareham will take over the captaincy, while Irish international Orla Prendergast joins the squad. Prendergast brings plenty of experience, having represented Ireland in One Day Internationals and most recently played for the Adelaide Strikers in Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League.
Meanwhile, the Welsh Fire Men remain firmly in the hunt for the knockout stages.
A hard-fought victory at Edgbaston lifted them into second place, but MI London’s win on Sunday means Welsh Fire now sit level on 12 points, behind leaders Trent Rockets on 16.
That makes today’s home fixture against Southern Brave at Sophia Gardens a huge one, with a place in The Hundred eliminator on the line.
As if the cricket wasn’t enough, fans are also in for a musical treat.
Legendary Newport rock band Feeder return to Sophia Gardens for their first major home performance in four years. The Kerrang! Hall of Fame inductees, who have sold more than 1.4 million albums and achieved five consecutive UK Top 10 albums, will perform before the men’s match.
Supporters are encouraged to arrive before 5.40pm to catch the performance, which will feature some of the band’s biggest hits, including Buck Rogers and Just the Way I’m Feeling.
With knockout qualification at stake on the pitch and one of Wales’ biggest rock bands providing the soundtrack beforehand, it’s shaping up to be another memorable evening at Sophia Gardens.
