As the cold winds of winter weave through Cardiff and rumours of snow are abound, the Cardiff Christmas Festival offering of the Snow Queen seems perfectly timed
Step into the enchanting Spiegel Tent at Sophia Gardens, the heart of the Cardiff Christmas Festival, and prepare to be whisked away on a magical journey of a reimagining of The Snow Queen. This magical production, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale (and the inspiration behind Disney’s Frozen), is a festive treat packed with charm, humour, and plenty of surprises.
The cosy circular tent, with its central stage, ensures a fantastic view for every seat, making the experience intimate and immersive. With just six talented cast members juggling multiple roles, the show brims with energy, creativity, and magical moments. From catchy original songs to interactive audience moments, this production is a captivating adventure for all ages.
The story follows Gerda on her quest to rescue her friend Kei from the clutches of the icy Snow Queen. Along the way, she encounters a host of delightful characters, including a group of flower people, a well-known reindeer, and two hilarious puppet penguins. But the real star of the show is Bryn, the 7ft Welsh polar bear who steals hearts with his charming personality and his very own catchy song. Bryn plays a heroic role in saving the day, adding a unique twist to the timeless tale. Although tephanie McConville‘s Snow Queen was undeniably formidable, nothing was ‘too’ scary for a younger audience – and whilst elements of the story could be seen as dark as a whole this is a magical experience with laughs and adorable characters.
The cast’s performances are top-notch, with Gretta and the Snow Queen delivering stunning vocals that truly blow you away. The show is sprinkled with Disney-like magic, making it perfect for young children, while its clever humour and heartwarming moments keep adults entertained as well.
Running until 31st December, The Snow Queen is the ideal festive outing for families. And yes, the big guy in red himself makes a special appearance, ensuring a little extra Christmas magic for everyone.
