Damn It, Cardiff! It’s time to do The Time Warp all over again!

Oh yeah, it’s time to do the time warp all over again. But this time its bigger and more extravagant than ever before, because it’s the 50th anniversary world tour. So, grab all the sweet transvestites you know because Damn It, Janet it’s time to head to the New Theatre for another dose of Rocky Horror!

For the completely uninitiated; first of all, where have you been the last five decades? Second, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has been essential theatre viewing since its conception by the legendary Richard O’Brien. A spoof of classic Hammer Horror films, the show sees an ordinary newlywed couple fall into the clutches of the villainous and sexy Dr Frank N Furter and have a night they will never forget. Horror may be in its name, but you can expect nothing short of belly laughs and world class musical performances, in on of the originals of rock opera.

We attended the opening night, and you better believe that Cardiff showed up in force and in costume to celebrate the shows return. This is my third time seeing the show and the audience partici…pation was some of the best I’ve ever seen. Again, if you’re new to the show, don’t worry about shouting out at the stage if you don’t know the words, just pick a character you like the look of, do your best to replicate their costume, and go along and have fun. Of course, for the initiated, you don’t need this review to tell you its time to dust off your corset and heels.

As I’ve said the audience were bigger and better than I’ve ever seen it before and so was the performances on stage. The story may not change but the cast can always bring something new to the show, and this time I was totally blown away by Suzie McAdam’s Magenta, Haley Flaherty’s Janet, and Jackie Clune’s take on the Narrator. McAdam and Flaherty had vocals and moves that commanded the audience to watch in awe, in particular during Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch-A-Touch Me. While Clune brought her years of stand-up and comedy experience to the New Theatre in spades. She easily got the most laughs out of the crowd and took to the role with ease.

It almost goes without saying that Stephen Webb’s turn on Frank N Furter was of course, stupendously fantastic. This is the second time in as many years that Cardiff has been lucky enough to see Webb embody the role, and we just can’t get enough of it. He emits a presence when he enters the stage that I think even the legendary Tim Curry would be just a little bit envious of.

Overall, there’s no two ways about it you have to go and see this famously infamous and fiercely fabulous show as it celebrates its 50th birthday in style. Convince everyone you know to buy a ticket before its too late.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
