New 52-bed apart-hotel plans for chambers above Cardiff Market

The Thackeray Group, in partnership with real estate advisors Savills and John Wotton Architects, has obtained planning permission to develop a 52-room apart-hotel, a café on the ground floor, and refurbish the Grade II listed Market Chambers building located at 5-7 St Mary St, above Cardiff central market.

The building, which was built in 1886 by Solomon Andrews, is a noteworthy example of Victorian commercial architecture and is described by Cadw as having “one of the most ambitious commercial frontages of mid-Victorian Cardiff, by its most ambitious entrepreneur”.

The project will bring an underused building and marks another investment in the city center by Thackeray Group. The Market Chambers project is located between Thackeray Group’s recently opened Flight Club and Howells masterplan scheme.

Investment Director at Thackeray Group, Giles Hoare, expressed confidence in Cardiff’s growth, and the Market Chambers apart-hotel consent highlights the company’s ongoing commitment to the city.

Annamaria Sgueglia, Senior Planner at Savills Planning, praised the scheme’s contribution to the positive regeneration of the surrounding area while staying true to the building’s architectural significance.
