Cardiff has a brand new place to get your Birria fix and it might just become your next food obsession. Chow Cartel has launched inside Roath’s popular Poutin Box, bringing slow cooked tacos, Tex Mex flavours and seriously loaded boxes to the neighbourhood.

The business is run by brother and sister team Kiki and Stephen, who have been working on the concept for a while. They first trialled their menu at Tiger Yard last summer, and after plenty of prep and testing, they have finally opened properly inside Poutin Box on Woodville Road.
The headline items are the Chow Boxes, which are trays of Tex Mex built to your order, but the highlight is, of course, The birrias. Their beef is slow cooked for six hours, then the cooking juices are used to make a rich consommé that simmers for a further eight hours. The result is incredibly tender meat packed with deep flavour and a dipping sauce that brings the whole thing together.
Birria tacos are currently available exclusively through Uber Eats, but their Chow Boxes can be picked up on site. These come stacked with Tex Mex comfort favourites including mac and cheese, rice, chips, BBQ beans or baked beans, homemade guac, pickles, red cabbage, pico de gallo and jalapeños, finished with lime and your choice of sauce.
Choose from honey BBQ, chipotle BBQ, smoked BBQ, chile habanero, sour cream, ranch, garlic mayo or the essential birria consommé.
It is Tex Mex with Cardiff attitude and the portions are not shy and affordable. With big flavours, hearty sides and quality ingredients, Chow Cartel looks set to become a go to for comforting takeaway nights and official opens on the 14th, but you can get your hands on them now!
