Motown The Musical – Wales Millennium Centre

The iconic ‘Motown The Musical’ hit Cardiff this week and was a colossal event!

This heart warming musical, tells the story of how ‘Berry Gordy’s’ ’Motown Record Corporation’,who brought some of the world’s most recognisable stars, into the limelight , such as Marvin Gaye, Dianna Ross, Stevie Wonder, Jackie Wilson, The Jackson 5 and The Temptations, to name a few.

His record label had massive international success and really promoted black artists, in a time where discrimination against the black community was hugely abundant. Edward Baruwa who plays the role of ‘Berry Gordy’,was splendid and really

captured his character perfectly. Edward Baruwa has already had critical acclaim, appearing in hit west end shows like ‘Les Miserable‘ (actually performing in their 25th anniversary show) and ‘Five Guys Named Mo’.

Playing the part of the legendary ‘Dianna Ross’ was the sensational Karis Anderson. I felt like I was in the presence of a movie star, her stage presence is just astounding, and her voice was silky smooth. I really have to name her as the star of the night for me! Although the whole cast were electrifying.

X factor finalist Nathan Lewis plays the part of ‘Smokey Robinson’, on what is his first professional theatre debut and I must say he did a superb job and really connected with his fellow cast members. Shak Gabbidon-Williams plays ‘Marvin Gaye’, who captured Marvin’s sometimes controversial actions.

It was a sensational show and I loved how the whole cast engaged with the audience and got everyone up dancing. If you’re looking for a fun filled night out that incorporates an important story, then this is the show for you.

Motown The Musical showing at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay until the 6th of April. Take a journey down Motown memory lane and learn the important story of Motown music.
