Take an Oscar winning love story and add in music and lyrics co written by Eurythmics Dave Stewart. This is Ghost the musical.
Sam is murdered on the street one night seemingly over just a wallet. He leaves behind his forever love Molly, but she isn’t ready to move on and after reluctantly listening to a fraudster of a psychic, she gets to find out the truth behind Sam’s murder. A story of love, greed and dishonesty all told by a fabulous cast in an excitingly creative way.
I must admit, at the start of the performance, I thought this was going to be a little too cutesy and maybe not the one for me. Then the first body arrived on stage and we saw the first actor to cleverly leave their body behind. Things got interesting from here.
Some innovative staging and tricks with lighting made sets work in ways I didn’t expect, but truly loved. Wait till you see the subway scene or Sam’s exit at the end!
Music wise, I loved how they teased us with snippets of the classic Unchained Melody, in different arrangements throughout the show, until hitting us hard with the most incredible version at the end. Though the song of the show for me had to be Rebekah Lowings’extremely powerful rendition of With You whilst playing the part of Molly. I definitely needed a tissue at this point.
There is a lot of humour as Jacqui Dubois brings to life the character of Oda Mae Brown. Is she anything like Whoopi Goldberg? Well actually yes she is, but she is also definitely bringing her own version of this phoney psychic alive.
I will admit to you now that I have never watched the film fully, which meant I was going in with completely fresh eyes. For me, James mateo-Salt screamed creep right from the start(He played Carl Brunner) and now I’ve seen the whole show, I am so impressed with how well he subtly oozed this sleazy evilness from the start before we really know his character’s true actions.
Sam Wheat is the character famously played by Patrick Swayze in the original film, but can Josh St.Clair live up to the Swayze charm? Well he certainly has an amazing range in styles for his vocals and sounds incredible throughout his big ballad moments. Not a disappointment at all.
During this performance I noticed quite a few audience members having, what looked like, quick little sentimental moments with their loved ones and it really was quite touching. This is a romantic little tear jerker worth seeing and you have until March the 8th to see it.
