European Cargo Opens New Base In Cardiff Airport

Cardiff Wales Airport is to be the base of a regular air freight service between China and Wales, operated by European Cargo.

Launching on 16 October 2024, the service will commence with three flights a week and gradually increase over time. This will be European Cargo’s second UK base, following St Athan Airport, a Ministry of Defence unit in Southern Wales.

“We’re delighted to announce this exciting development at Cardiff Airport,” said Jason Holt, CEO of European Cargo“As we continue to grow our business expanding outwards from Bournemouth, we see Wales as a fantastic place to invest in. We look forward to working with the Airport team.”

The new service is set to provide job opportunities for locals to Cardiff Airport, with the St Athan’s and Cardiff hubs already generating over 4,000 jobs in Wales. Cardiff was chosen by European Cargo due to its 24/7 operations, zero-slot constraints, 230 acres of land, and easy motorway access. Additionally, the airport is accustomed to large aircraft movements, and the new service will operate using an A340-600

“This is a fantastic and exciting opportunity for the Airport and European Cargo,” commented Spencer Birns, CEO of Cardiff Wales Airport. “There is huge demand for air freighters in the marketplace and this investment in Wales is primarily down to the excellent facilities and teams we have at the Airport. We’re committed to diversifying our business for the benefit of Wales. We look forward to working with European Cargo to help make their new base a success.”
