EARNEST?-Wilde Gets a Hilarious Makeover

An Edinburgh Fringe smash hit has landed at Cardiff’s New Theatre for just two nights — and it’s not one to miss.

I had the pleasure of joining an audience buzzing with excitement, ready to enjoy the great works of Oscar Wilde — or at least a version of them… thoroughly and gloriously butchered.

This isn’t The Importance of Being Earnest. This is The Importance of Having a Really Good Audience — an audience willing to fill in for mysteriously ‘missing’ cast members while the remaining actors scramble to keep the show on track, all under the guidance of a director who spends far too much time front of house (and none of it in the wings where they probably should be).

The Say It Again, Sorry team have created a riotous show full of audience participation, clever improvisation and physical comedy. Think slapstick — but smarter, slicker, and much funnier.

This is a show you most definitely haven’t seen before… and never will again. Why? Because every performance changes entirely depending on who’s watching. The show I saw last night starred a data analyst – yes, really — who had only come out for a quiet night with his wife, but ended up taking on the lead role. That version of the show will never be repeated, and the one you see tonight will be entirely its own beast.

The storyline remains the same, as do the brilliant characters and razor-sharp punchlines — delivered both verbally and physically. But with seven willing audience members filling in the gaps, anything can (and will) happen. Expect the unexpected.

Frequently likened to The Play That Goes Wrong and Noises Off, this chaotic whirlwind is bursting with charm. The audience absolutely adored a character who, hilariously, says nothing at all for most of the show. Even the programme is a laugh!

The cast are top-tier, with impeccable timing, exaggerated physicality, and a genuine knack for winning over the audience from the start. There were several moments I watched through my fingers — particularly one involving a prop drink mix-up that ended in an unfortunate encounter with a muffin. Yes, you really do have to go to find out what that’s about.

This is your chance to become the star. The show has one more night in Cardiff, at the New Theatre on Tuesday 15th April — don’t miss your chance to be part of something brilliant.
