Cardiff has been named as one of the UK’s best budget staycation destinations, according to new research from holiday let agency Sykes Holiday Cottages.

A survey of 2,000 UK adults found that the capital city of Wales was voted as the second-best value staycation spot across four categories, including accommodation, transport, activities and eating out.

This year, Sykes has seen a whopping 95% increase in bookings to Cardiff and its surrounding areas compared to prior to the pandemic, with staycationers clearly on the hunt for good value travel options amid the cost-of-living crisis.

Cardiff was joined in the top 10 list of cost-effective holiday hotspots by several other bustling cities, including the home of the Beatles, Liverpool, as well as Newcastle and York.

Meanwhile, the survey went on to reveal that when it comes to seaside breaks, Blackpool and Brighton ranked top.

Graham Donoghue, chief executive of Sykes Holiday Cottages, which commissioned the research, said: “Cardiff is full of history and beautiful architecture, with the largest concentration of castles than any other city in the world. It also offers great value for money and wonderful hospitality.

“With the rising cost of living continuing to put a squeeze on budgets, many holidaymakers will be looking to see where they can get the best value for money on holidays this year. Making travel plans closer to home could be an ideal solution, as it is easier to stick to a holiday budget while still spending quality time with loved ones.

“With the popularity of staycations not expected to subside anytime soon, this demand for better value options could be a big help for local economies in locations like Cardiff. Holidaymakers will likely still be looking to spend, whether that be on local attractions or eating out, so it could be a real boost this summer.”

The survey went on to reveal that a massive 94 per cent say it is important to them to get good value for money when booking a holiday, while 75 per cent say they want to get the best bang for their buck with accommodation.

However, more than a quarter (26 per cent) of those who are planning to go away this year have said their holiday kitties have decreased because of the rising costs they are contending with.

But despite having less money than usual to go away with, nearly two in three (64 per cent) will not let it deter them from having a memorable trip.

To help holidaymakers looking to enjoy an affordable getaway this year, Sykes has compiled a roundup of its top 10 cheapest UK holiday destinations.
