Well, this is still happening, isn’t it. The lockdown has certainly been a bit of a rollercoaster for many over the past few weeks (that’s putting it very lightly). Luckily there have been some who used this time as an excuse to do something bloomin’ great, reminding us why the food scene of Cardiff is still one to be envied across the UK… Introducing Smashed Burgers.
Meet Marcus, a University of South Wales music lecturer who found he had time on his hands whilst being stuck at home. He has successfully launched his own burger delivery service for Cardiff. The deliveries are all completed by Marcus’ girlfriend Emma who will certainly be busy if orders continue to rack up as they have been since the launch.
To help out independent business during this tricky time, Smashed Burgers are using different local butchers each week. Their current menu includes a Double Cheeseburger and Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger. Each coming with plenty of signature sauce made from Mexican chilli’s and slow-roasted garlic, a recipe that took years to perfect. All meals come with a side of fries and a drink for just £10!
We asked Marcus about his success after a sell-out debut weekend for the new name in home-cooked burgers:
“The timing of it is that it happened during lockdown, however the idea and recipes I have been building and researching for the last three years. Gaining feedback and changes from close friends and family- it was ready to share just as we locked down”
“[The recipes] were shared with a friend for her birthday; she enjoyed them so much she told me to share them. So I did. That’s the Smashed story in a sentence. After lockdown I’d love a place to share even more Smashed recipes and ideas, I have lots!”
Marcus and Emma are currently working from their home kitchen every Saturday but hope to move to a permanent location once the lockdown is over. I mean they are literally working out of their own kitchen! You don’t get much more homemade than that!
