Bat out of Hell was way down in the Valley/Cardiff last night!
The award winning global phenomenon finally hits the highway and pulls into the New Theatre this week. This fantasy epic set to the legendary music of Jim Steinman and Meat Loaf will absolutely blow Cardiff audiences away. Its packed full of hits, comedy and rock n’ roll, you don’t want to miss out.
Tuesday’s opening night would have marked Meat Loaf’s 75th Birthday, had we not tragically lost him earlier this year. To celebrate the incredible life and music he created the Bat Out Of Hell production team pulled out all the stops. The audience were asked to light up their torches and dance along to the final song in tribute to the late, great legend in a beautiful memorial. Also the Welsh Dragon Chapter Cardiff motorbike group pulled up to do a couple of laps of the New Theatre in honour of the show coming to Wales. It was a beautiful bittersweet celebration of Meat Loaf’s music and would bring a tear to the eye of any fan, new or old.
The show itself was absolutely spectacular, set design in particular was truly incredible on this one. There were times where so much dynamic movement was taking place on all levels of the stage that it felt like looking at a renaissance painting come to life! Everything from the beautiful costumes, huge dance moves, extravagant sets and clever camera trickery gave the audience a sense of looking into Meat Loaf’s imagination. It all came together so beautifully it was hard to know where to look.

I don’t think I’ve ever been to a show so filled with talented performers. The entire cast are phenomenal! Normally there are one or two standouts for me but last night I honestly couldn’t pick. The unbelievable displays of vocals and movement were jaw dropping. A lot of Meat Loaf’s songs must be tricky to pull off for any performer but the whole cast couldn’t put a foot wrong. They totally and utterly blew the audience away. Particular highlight set pieces for me were You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth, the silly and sexy Paradise By The Dashboard Light and of course the epic Bat Out Of Hell. Epic being the appropriate word here!

I particularly loved the symbolism of passion and love that the whole cast would perform. So many times cast would fight and then hug or kiss, both in the songs when performing and in the background. It was like I Would Do Anything For Love was constantly playing out. That classic ballad of the difficulties of loving someone forever seemed to be mirrored across the stage. It was really beautiful to watch.
Overall, I loved Bat Out Of Hell. It’s a true rock opera in every sense. Huge vocals, passionate dancing and some bonkers storytelling that wove together perfectly. Its an easy 5 stars. Any fan of Meat Loaf, or really any fan of theatre and rock n’ roll, will adore this show.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
