Review: Top Hat at Wales Millennium Centre – Pure Golden Age Glamour

Stepping into the Wales Millennium Centre last night felt like being whisked straight into the glittering world of 1930s Hollywood. Top Hat is everything you’d hope for from a classic musical – elegant, funny, and bursting with toe-tapping tunes that have you shimmying in your seat from start to finish.

It was my first time seeing the show, and I was utterly captivated. The dazzling, revolving, Art Deco set transported the audience from London to Venice with effortless style, while the costumes were a visual feast – all flowing gowns, sharp tuxedos and feathers that shimmered under the stage lights.

What really surprised me was just how funny it was – full of quick wit, perfectly timed one-liners and moments of pure physical comedy that had the whole audience laughing out loud. It balanced glamour and humour so beautifully that you couldn’t help but be swept along for the ride.

Of course, it’s the musical numbers that truly steal the show. From Cheek to Cheek to Let’s Face the Music and Dance, every song was performed with such energy and charm that it was impossible not to smile (or quietly hum along). The choreography was slick, the orchestra faultless, and the entire production a joyful celebration of classic musical theatre at its best.

Top Hat at the Wales Millennium Centre is pure escapism – a glittering reminder of why we fell in love with musicals in the first place. If you get the chance, grab your ticket, polish your dancing shoes, and prepare to be swept off your feet.
