Walkers reaching the summit of Pen y Fan last weekend were met with an unexpected sight – a scaffolding tower standing tall at the peak of South Wales’ highest mountain. But this wasn’t a stunt or construction project. It was a heartfelt show of solidarity from a group of scaffolders rallying behind a much-loved colleague.
More than 70 scaffolders swapped their usual sites for the mountainside, carrying heavy gear to the 886m summit to build what could be the UK’s ‘highest’ scaffolding tower. The effort was all in support of Jason Cary, a fellow scaffolder who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
The team didn’t just give their time – they also donated their day’s wages, raising nearly £7,000 in a single act of generosity. When Jason’s message was read out at the top, it proved a deeply emotional moment for a group of men more used to hard hats than heartfelt words.
Jason is currently receiving care at Dorothy House Hospice, and his colleagues are determined to keep fundraising for him and his family. Their efforts have already helped raise more than £25,000, with donations continuing to pour in.
